Plogging the Trail Information
"Plogging" is a combination of jogging with picking up litter—merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp (pick up) and jogga (jog) gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives). It started as an organized activity in Sweden around 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution.
As with each of the previous years, Juneteenth Marathon will provide all plogging equipment (trash pickers, trash bags & nylon/roofing gloves) as well as non-alcoholic refreshments courtesy of Athletic Brewing. Juneteenth Marathon will also provide each run club $100 to cover any pre- and/or post-plogging refreshments the run club wishes to provide for attending/participating members. However, for this year’s iteration of “Plogging the Trails”, we’ll be ‘raising the stakes’ so to speak and introducing something new by incorporating a point-based competition to the mix. In a nutshell, each participating run club will receive points based on three different components of their plogging event:
· Plogging Participation - 1 POINT awarded for each plogging participant in attendance· Trash Collected - 2 POINTS awarded for each trash bag filled or large item collected
· Trail Covered – 3 POINTS awarded for each 0.1mi of trail covered
